Newsletters at Holy Ground

Birthed in 1994 as a non-profit retreat ministry, Holy Ground, Inc. is the vision of theology school friends Dorri Sherrill and Sandra Smith. Both Dorri and Sandra experienced seminary as life-giving and healing, and a grace-filled place to ask questions. Both wanted to continue the theological quest after graduation. Through Holy Ground, they shaped a way to invite others to join them in exploring images of the Holy, our relationship to the Holy, and how this relationship affects our daily living and guides us toward justice-making. At Holy Ground retreats, workshops, and classes, questions guide conversations rather conversations providing answers. These events allow participants to learn from each other as we experience the Holy in conversation, creativity, and social action. Holy Ground's life and work are shaped by feminist Christian practices of mutuality in relationships, valuing of diversity, recognizing our interdependency with all of creation, and affirming the inherent worth of each person and her/his experience. Though grounded in Christian traditions, Holy Ground appreciates and draws from the wisdom of other faiths, and welcomes conversation with and participation by people of all faith perspectives and experiences.

In the spring of 1999, Holy Ground expanded its ministries to include a daytime retreat center and moved into a beautiful old house near downtown Asheville. With the new space came the opportunity to provide small group gatherings, worship circles, and learning circles. With a lending library and a room for art exhibits, Holy Ground provides a sanctuary of beauty and peace in the midst of the city.

The journey begun in 1994 continues as Holy Ground becomes more integrated in its local and spiritual communities. With gratitude and delight we acknowledge our companions on the journey who have helped us transform dream into reality.
